Public Purposes Trust

This trust was established in August 1985 when the Trust Deed was executed by the Society and approved by the Attorney General. The Trust Deed was ratified by the Society Public Purposes Trust Act 1985.

The Law Society of Western Australia is the trustee of the Public Purposes Trust. However, it does not decide which applicants are to receive funding. Applications are assessed through an independent three-stage process.

In its role as Trustee, the Society sets policies with regard to the investment of the Trust's assets and provides administration services to the Trust.

The Trust receives it's income from two sources being interest on the Trust's investments and interest paid on Solicitor's Trust Accounts.

In Western Australia, legal practitioners are required to keep general trust accounts with banks and the interest earned on those trust monies is paid to the Public Purposes Trust.

The Law Society of Western Australia Public Purposes Trust is required pursuant to CO 03/1095, gazetted on 10 August 2004 to advise that it is not licensed under the Corporations Act and is not required to hold an Australian Financial Services license and it is not regulated under the Insurance Act 1973.
