Young Lawyers Committee

Welcome to the YLC section of The Law Society of Western Australia web site.

If you are a law student, a solicitor or a barrister in either your first five years of practice, or under the age of 35 years, you are a young lawyer.  The Young Lawyers Committee works for all young lawyers in WA, but to get the full benefit of what YLC can offer to you, membership of the Law Society of Western Australia is required.

The YLC runs a monthly continuing professional development seminar series called the YLC Basics Series, as well as social and sporting functions at least once per month to facilitate networking and collegiality amongst the junior profession.

Some of the main YLC events throughout the year are:

Golden Gavel Breakfast
The public speaking competition for young lawyers. All subjects are of a humorous and topical nature, so come along for breakfast and laugh with, or at, your friends. The competition is adjudicated by Chief Justice and Judge O’Brien and the winner represents WA in the national Golden Gavel competition.

Articles Uncut
An evening where law students can hear from recent graduates about how to navigate the legal graduate recruitment waters without someone from HR standing over them.

Advocacy Workshop and Weekend:
Two courses covering the theory and practice of advocacy.  The workshop is run over a number of Saturday mornings and involves seminars from of the senior members of the bar and judiciary in the theory of effective advocacy.  The Weekend is a practical course using a number of scenarios coached by senior barristers and members of the judiciary.

Quiz Night, Netball and Touch Rugby
Held on separate evenings throughout the year, each provides another opportunity to have fun outside the law, whilst still facilitating the competition between firms.

Annual Fundraising Luncheon
Started in 2008 with guest speaker Hon. Michael Kirby QC, then on the High Court bench, this lunch aims to provide a high calibre speaker each year of interest to the profession in a formal setting whilst also raising funds for charity.

End of Year Drinks
A chance to relax, catch up and have a good night out to celebrate the end of another legal year.

YLC Basics Series
Hour-long CPD seminars covering many areas of law held once a month from February to November each year, getting CPD points was never so easy.

This section contains information about YLC events, the YLC Committee, its working groups, as well as how to get involved in them.
