The effective management of time recording, billing and trust accounts are essential for any successful legal practice. It is vital for legal support staff to know and understand accounting concepts and terminology involved for clients and matters.
During the session, delegates will look at the role of the lawyer and client, as well as associated accounting and billing procedures. Processes examined will include ledgers, trust accounts, types of items that may be billed and identification of essential information when issuing bills.
Students will also discuss the importance of communication with the client about issues relating to bills and how this impacts on debtors.
At the end of the session students will be able to:
- Understand both office and trust accounting procedures applicable once a new client is engaged.
- Identify different models for billing including time recording, fixed price and value based billing.
- Identify terminology related to client and matter accounting.
- Understand the importance of communication as part of the billing process.
