How will AI transform business? Focussing on autonomous machines/vehicles, e.g. industrial robots, driverless cars and trains, loan haul trucks in mines etc., two questions arise: (1) how to regulate the use of these machines/vehicles and (2) how to determine liability when something goes wrong – was there negligence and how can that be determined?
Machine-learning algorithms on which AI is built and the Internet of Things which is used to support autonomous machines/vehicles, facilitate machine learning – which means that computers are no longer merely executing pre-coded instructions but are capable of reaching intuitive solutions to problems based on patterns in data that exceed their original programming. So how does intent and causation work here? This seminar will examine these issues of negligence, legal culpability and damages/compensation for loss in relation to autonomous machines/vehicles and look at what is on the horizon for regulation in this area.
