In recognition of International Women’s Day, the Society will host a replay of the Women, Finance and Empowerment Forum webinar first hosted on 26 November 2020.
In partnership with legalsuper, we are delighted to present this Forum which deals with the necessity to talk more openly about financial inequality and the current statistics on women including their retirement income prospects, what needs to change and what individuals can do to take charge of their own financial futures.
Chaired by Kirsten Mander from legalsuper, this online Forum brings to you a group of powerful advocates on the front line of progressing better financial outcomes for women. They will examine how we can empower a different financial narrative for women and how you can be your best weapon towards a more favourable financial future.
Hear about what’s often not discussed including early experiences and money, decision making and money, and common emotional relationships we have with regard to money.

Chair - Kirsten Mander
Kirsten Mander is chair of legalsuper, the superannuation fund for Australia’s legal community. Legalsuper specialises in delivering products and high levels of personal service that are tailored to the particular aspirations and needs of the legal community.
Kirsten is an experienced chair and non-executive director. In addition to her role as chair of legalsuper, Kirsten is also chair of the International Women’s Development Agency and a director of Peninsula Health. She was formerly chair of the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority and a director on various boards including Swinburne University, RT Health, Australian Corporate Lawyers Association and the Law Institute of Victoria (where she was also chair of its Ethics Committee).
Previously Kirsten had over 20 years’ management experience in the listed, private and profit to member sectors. She was a senior executive, general counsel & company secretary for a number of Australia's top companies including Australian Unity, Smorgon Steel Group and Western Mining, working throughout Australasia, Asia and the former Soviet Union.
She holds a Master of Laws from Melbourne University and is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia and a fellow of the Risk Management Institute of Australia
Melissa Birks

Melissa Birks
Mel started her career in superannuation in the ATO, moving to work with industry super funds in 2004. Her roles have included senior roles in stakeholder relations, strategy, marketing and communications in Link Group/ Superpartners, HESTA, Hostplus, AUSfund, Industry Fund Services and ME Bank. Prior to joining AIST in September 2019, she was at ASIC as a Senior Specialist in the Superannuation team where she provided technical analysis and strategic advice on consumer issues in relation to superannuation.
She is now the Head of Advocacy at AIST and works closely with AIST member funds, regulators and government on policy and implementation issues.
Mel is passionate about delivering benefits to members, with a particular focus on improving women’s retirement outcomes.
Mel is also the current deputy chair of the Victorian Committee of Women in Super and was a member of the Mother’s Day Classic organising committee in Melbourne for a number of years.
She has Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne, a Graduate Diploma in Educational Psychology from Monash University and a MBA from Deakin University and has successfully completed the Advanced Leadership Program run by Women & Leadership Australia
Emma Dawson

Emma Dawson
Emma Dawson is Executive Director of public policy think tank Per Capita. She has worked as a researcher at Monash University and the University of Melbourne; in policy and public affairs for SBS and Telstra; and as a senior policy adviser in the Rudd and Gillard Governments.
Emma has published reports, articles and opinion pieces on a wide range of public policy issues. She is a regular contributor to Guardian Australia and The Australian Financial Review, is a frequent guest on various ABC radio programs nationally, and an occasional panellist on The Drum on ABC TV. She appears regularly as an expert witness before parliamentary inquiries and often speaks at public events and conferences in Australia and internationally.
Emma is the co-author of Per Capita’s landmark report Measure for Measure: Gender Equality in Australia, and co-editor, with Professor Janet McCalman, of the upcoming collection of essays What happens next? Reconstructing Australia after COVID-19, published by Melbourne University Press in September 2020.

Karen Eley
Karen Eley is the Founder and CEO of Women Talking Finance, which provides Money Coaching and Financial literacy services, specifically to women. As a former financial adviser for over fifteen years, she saw the need to assist women better engage with their finances, so she left a successful financial planning practice to focus on Money Coaching.
Karen practices a unique, step-by-step coaching process that uncovers the deep-seated money blocks that subconsciously hold women back, personally and financially. With this awareness, she assists clients to move from financial confusion to financial clarity by providing them with the practical tools, knowledge, support, and strategies they need to become fully financially empowered.
Karen is a Certified Money Coach (CMC) ®, holds a Bachelor of Accounting and a Diploma in Financial Planning. As a former shoe addict (yes, she understands the temptation of wants vs saving) she is committed to showing women what’s possible with money, from both a practical and psychological perspective.
Dr Kristin Gainey
Associate Professor, School of Psychological Science, The University of Western Australia
Dr Kristin Gainey
Kristin Gainey, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the School of Psychological Science at UWA and a registered clinical psychologist in the United States. Her work focuses on emotions and cognitions as they relate to depression, anxiety, and wellbeing.
Prior to joining UWA, Kristin was an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Psychology at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, from 2013-2020. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, and she has received early career awards from the American Psychological Society, American Psychological Association, and the Society for Research in Psychopathology.
She is active as a reviewer and editor, serving as an Associate Editor for Psychological Assessment and Self and Identity and on the editorial boards of several journals.
Clare Thompson

Clare Thompson
Clare Thompson is a barrister at Francis Burt Chambers where she practices in commercial, banking and property litigation, taxation litigation and wills and estate litigation. She joined the independent bar in 2004 after 10 years at Freehills.
In 2002 Clare was President of the Law Society of WA and a director of the Law Council of Australia. Since 1995 she has served on many Law Society Committees and in 2015 was elected a Life Member of the Society. She served on the Legal Practice Board between 2004 and 2010.
Clare is currently Vice-President of Women Lawyers of WA and was a foundation director of Australian Women Lawyers, established in 1997. In 2011 Clare established the Aboriginal Women’s Legal Education Trust to provide scholarships to indigenous women to study law.
In 2012 Clare won Women Lawyer’s “Women Lawyer of the Year” award and also won the Law Society’s “Lawyer of the Year”, more than 5 years admitted. In 2013, she was named in the Financial Review’s inaugural list of “100 Women of Influence”.
Since 2003 Clare has been a member of several regulatory boards and committees in the health profession and is currently a director of APAC Ltd, one of the national health regulators.
In 2003 Clare was appointed as a member of the Legal Costs Committee, a statutory authority established under the Legal Profession Act. In 2016 she was appointed the Chair of that body.
