As part of Law Week, the Law Society’s Young Lawyers Committee is celebrating the important work of Aboriginal legal centres and is raising awareness about how the legal profession, students and members of the public can assist.
The event will centre on a screening of In My Blood it Runs, an intimate observational documentary from the perspective of 10-year old Dujuan who is an Arrente Aboriginal boy growing up in Alice Springs. The documentary follows Dujuan as he shares his understanding of the world around him as shaped by his Arrente education. This is contrasted with his ‘failure’ in the western education system, ongoing scrutiny from welfare services and the police and a perilously close brush with incarceration.
“We tell our stories in paintings, song and film. This film shows us that consultation and collaboration work. Both parties wanted to do it. Dujuan wanted a film about him and the film team had to give away prescribed story that they had to allow families to have ownership and control and to tell them how they should be doing it. The process gave them agency and produced a very strong film. The film team put aside ego, professionalism, learnings and tried to relearn a new way. I am quite proud of it actually.” William Tilmouth, Arrernte Elder and Film Advisor
Free to attend, enjoy the movie, meet like-minded people, and taste canapes and refreshments inspired by the unique flavours of Aboriginal cuisine. Guests will also hear from Lexi Lachal – Lawyer, Civil Law and Human Rights Unit, Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited.
