The process of drafting legislation and the task of statutory interpretation are inextricably intertwined. In this seminar, drafters from the Parliamentary Counsel’s Office (PCO) will talk about the legislative drafting process, some of the matters that determine or influence the way in which legislation is drafted and how these affect how legislation should be read and interpreted. The discussion will highlight matters such as the role of the Interpretation Act 1984 and other Acts underpinning the WA legal system, drafting conventions and the influence of legal policy principles on the drafting process.
