Cluedunnit Kids 2021: Awards Ceremony

Cluedunnit Kids 2021: Awards Ceremony

Tuesday, 20 July 2021

Cluedunnit Kids gets Year 6 and Year 5/6 student teams to investigate a fictional criminal offence with the goal of identifying the prime suspect.

The winners of this year’s Cluedunnit Kids awards were as follows:

Winner: Our Lady of Grace (North Beach), The Inspectigators

Runner-up: John XXIII College (Mount Claremont), The JTC Super Snoopers

Ambassador Award: Maylands Peninsula Primary School (Maylands), The Radical Radishes

The awards ceremony for the Law Society of Western Australia’s Cluedunnit Kids, an annual Law Week initiative, will take place at the Perth Children’s Court on Thursday, 22 July from 1.15pm to 2.00pm.

What happens?

A brief of evidence provides clues and students ask questions to gather further evidence to identify the prime suspect and eliminate other suspects. Each team then creates and submits their findings in a creative way of their choosing.

Submissions are judged using the following criteria: correct identification of suspect; supporting evidence; creativity; application of legal principles; and appropriate sentencing.

Law Society President, Jocelyne Boujos said, “Cluedunnit Kids is an excellent example of curious and talented young people investigating a fictional criminal scenario (created by Mrs Claire Rossi from Legal Aid WA), determining the prime suspect, and then applying legal principles in a creative submission.

Having had the opportunity to hone their legal and detective brains, some of the students may now be thinking about future careers as police officers, lawyers or judges.”

This year’s scenario focused on an incident at the Preservation Landcare and Nature Trust (PLANT) community garden where Mr Lou Pin was assaulted, and some items were stolen.

The three main suspects were Jazz Min, Tom Arto and Honey Suckle. The brief of evidence included statements from Mr Lou Pin, Sergeant Arty Choke, Constable Sal Ari and Constable Fran Gipanni PhD. Feedback from the coordinating teachers confirmed that the students had a lot of fun working out who was the prime suspect and presenting their findings in a creative way of their own choosing.

Cluedunnit attracts an increasing number of participants each year – this year 448 students in 84 teams from 26 metropolitan and regional schools covering all socio-economic groups participated. The 24 submissions received were very creative ranging from digital video files in the style of news reports, game shows (I’m Guilty. Get Me Out of Here!), The Inspectigators (possibly modelled on the ABC show The Inbestigators), re-enactments, as well as raps, PowerPoint presentations and hard copy police files.

Cluedunnit Kids: Have fun, ask questions, and get creative.

Media are welcome to attend the awards ceremony at the Perth Children’s Court on Thursday, 22 July 2021 from 1.15pm to 2.00pm.
