The Law Society is saddened to hear of the passing of the Honourable Kevin Hammond AO, a longstanding member of the Law Society.
Law Society President Rebecca Lee said, “The Honourable Kevin Hammond AO will be remembered for his sound judgment, human approach and his significant contribution to the administration of justice in Western Australia over a distinguished legal career spanning 47 years. He was known as a gentleman of the profession. On behalf of the Law Society, our members and staff I extend our deepest sympathy to the family.”
Mr Hammond served as the inaugural Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission from December 2003 until his retirement in March 2007, at the age of 70. His distinguished legal career including serving as Judge of the District Court of Western Australia from 1982 to 1995, and as Chief Judge from 1995 to 2003. He was also President of the Crime Prevention Council of Western Australia from 1983 to 1984 and chair of the Review Committee established in 1996 to review all aspects of remission and parole.
Mr Hammond’s service to the law, particularly in relation to criminal trial procedures and corruption investigation through judicial roles, review and administration was recognised in 2009 when he was awarded as an Officer of the Order of Australia.
