Joint Media Release: The Law Society of Western Australia and Law Access Ltd | Pro Bono Lawyers Walk for Justice

Tuesday, 16 May 2023

The annual Law Access Walk for Justice on Tuesday, 16 May celebrates National Pro Bono Day and the generous pro bono contributions of Western Australian lawyers and law students.

The Hon. Peter Quinlan, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, launched and led the 2023 Law Access Walk for Justice.

822 registered to walk and included judicial officers, pro bono lawyers from community legal centres, government and the private profession, law students and legal support – all gathering to promote access to justice in Western Australia and raise funds for Law Access, Western Australia’s pro bono referral service.

The walkers followed the traditional foreshore route, between Point Fraser and the Bell Tower. Walkers unable to be in Perth on the day also walked their own routes across Australia.

“Virtual” and in-person walkers can share their pictures on social media, using #w4j23.

Event participants raised over $100,000. Combined with the McCusker Charitable Foundation matching donations up to $50,000 and our generous corporate sponsors, a total of $168,000 was raised to help sustain Law Access.

The President of the Law Society of Western Australia, Ante Golem, one of the 2023 Law Access Walk for Justice Ambassadors, said: “It was wonderful as part of Law Week this year to see such a great turn out this morning at the Walk for Justice fundraiser. Congratulations to everyone who took part and thank you to all who donated to this important cause. Law Access, the charitable arm of the Law Society, provides a vital safety net for vulnerable Western Australians facing legal problems where no funded legal assistance is available.”

Law Access CEO Alana Dowley said: “On this glorious Perth day, we again broke the record for the number of registered walkers. The support for this event is heart-warming. We also raised much needed funds for Law Access and highly deserved recognition for all our contributors.”

This year the prominent Event Ambassadors joining us included members of the judiciary, legal profession, University professors and students. A full list of Ambassadors can be found here: Law Access Walk 4 Justice 2023 (lawaccessw4j.com.au)
