The Law Society of Western Australia congratulates Mara Barone SC, who has been appointed as a Judge of the District Court. The appointment was announced today by the Attorney General, the Hon John Quigley MLA.

Law Society President Nicholas van Hattem said, “On behalf of the WA legal profession and members of the Law Society, I congratulate Ms Barone SC on her appointment as District Court Judge. Ms Barone is a preeminent criminal law barrister, with experience across the length and breadth of our State. She is an ethical leader with an encyclopaedic knowledge of criminal law and has been a generous mentor for many lawyers. While many in the profession will miss her close counsel, the Society and profession have no doubt that Ms Barone will serve the community with wisdom, impartiality and integrity. We wish Ms Barone SC well in this important role.”

Mara Barone SC was admitted to practice in Western Australia in 2001. She commenced practice at the Legal Aid Commission of Western Australia and, following eight years at the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia, commenced her own firm in 2011. She has practised at the Independent Bar since May 2018.

Mara Barone SC practises widely in criminal law, including in relation to matters under the Dangerous Sexual Offenders Act 2006, on the subject of which she was awarded a Master of Laws in 2011. Ms Barone SC was appointed Senior Counsel in 2018.
