Law Society Welcomes Appointment of State Solicitor of Western Australia to District Court

Wednesday, 18 May 2022

The Law Society of Western Australia congratulates State Solicitor Nicholas Egan PSM on his appointment to the bench of the District Court, as announced by the State Attorney General, the Hon John Quigley MLA. Mr Egan will replace current District Court Judge and former State Solicitor, His Honour Judge Timothy Sharp, who will be retiring from the court.

Mr Egan was admitted to practice on 24 February 1992 and has gained extensive experience over a 34-year legal career in major litigation and disputes, as well as in commercial law.

He joined the Western Australian State Solicitor’s Office in 2005 and was appointed State Solicitor for the Western Australian Government in 2017.

Mr Egan was lauded for playing a lead role in advising on the COVID-19 pandemic and awarded the Australian Public Service Medal (PSM) in 2021 for outstanding public service as State Solicitor of Western Australia.

He has also been a valued and longstanding supporter of the Law Society since joining in 1999.

Law Society President Rebecca Lee said, “Nicholas Egan as State Solicitor has made a valuable contribution to the administration of law, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and in leading the State Solicitor’s Office management and resolution of claims of historic child sexual abuse.  On behalf of the wider Western Australian legal profession, I congratulate him on his appointment and wish him all the best in his transition to his new role as a District Court judge.”
