Legal profession warmly welcomes Professor Rosalind Croucher as AHRC President

The Law Council of Australia has welcomed the appointment of Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher AM as the next President of the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).

Fiona McLeod SC, President of the Law Council of Australia, said Professor Croucher was eminently qualified for the vital role.

“Professor Croucher has had a brilliant career in the law, and her long and successful stint as President of the Australian Law Reform Commission has enhanced the standing of the institution,” Ms McLeod said.

“She enjoys an outstanding reputation among her peers for her clear-sighted, pragmatic, and strategic approach to law reform.

“Her contribution this year to the Law Council’s Justice Project, our national review into the impediments to justice in Australia, has been invaluable.

“I have no doubt her seven-year term as President of the AHRC with be marked by the same insight and clarity that has defined her illustrious career to date.

The AHRC serves a critical role in ensuring that human rights are promoted, protected, and understood.

“We are extremely pleased to see someone of Professor Croucher’s standing appointed to lead.”

Ms McLeod also paid tribute to outgoing AHRC president, Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs.

“Professor Triggs served the AHRC with indefatigable passion and purpose,” Ms McLeod said.

“We are grateful for the way she has represented the legal profession and the promotion of human rights within and outside Australia. We trust that she will continue to make a positive contribution to the law and our national debate.”

On Friday, 16 June, the Law Council released its Policy Statement on Human Rights and the Legal Profession, laying out core principles and commitments of behalf of the Australian legal profession.
