Western Australian Legal Profession to Join the Legal Profession Uniform Law Scheme on 1 July 2022

Wednesday, 1 June 2022

The State Attorney General John Quigley has announced that Western Australia will officially join the Legal Profession Uniform Law scheme on 1 July 2022.

Uniform Law harmonises regulation of the legal profession, cuts red tape and creates a single system to govern legal practice across participating jurisdictions. The scheme came into operation in Victoria and New South Wales in July 2015.

Following the passage of enabling legislation through State Parliament in April this year, WA’s legal system, including the legal profession, will become more accessible, efficient and cost effective under the scheme.

Law Society President Rebecca Lee said, “The Law Society has been in favour of Western Australia adopting the Legal Profession Uniform Law for many years and congratulates the Attorney General on today’s announcement.

“A single, uniform set of professional conduct rules providing inter-jurisdictional consistency can only benefit consumers of legal services, the legal profession and regulators, especially with national and international firms now being commonplace.

“This is an exciting change to the regulation of the Legal Profession and the Law Society will continue to support our members to navigate the new regime.”

The Law Society has also developed resources and has been and will continue to provide CPD Seminars on topical Uniform Law matters such as Costs Disclosure, Complaints and Conduct Rules to assist the West Australian profession in preparing for the changes brought about by the Uniform Law. Visit the CPD Seminars section of the Law Society website for more information.

A special feature on Legal Profession Uniform Law will also be published in the upcoming June edition of the Law Society’s Brief journal.
