The awards ceremony for the Law Society of Western Australia’s Cluedunnit Kids, an annual Law Week initiative, will take place at the Perth Children’s Court on Thursday, 30 July from 1.15pm to 2.00pm.
The winners of this year’s Cluedunnit Kids awards were as follows:
Winning Team: The Fast and the Curious, Peter Moyes Anglican Community School (Mindarie) – A pop-up book submission.
Runner-Up Team: The Iona Team, Iona Presentation College (Mosman Park) – A video file submission that incorporated a game show type format.
Ambassador School Award Winner: Roseworth Primary School (Girrawheen) – Selected based on the manner the team/s at a school conduct themselves during the competition.
Cluedunnit Kids gets Year 6 and Year 5/6 student teams to investigate a fictional criminal offence with the goal of identifying the prime suspect.
A brief of evidence provides clues and students ask questions to get further evidence to identify the prime suspect and eliminate other suspects. Each team then creates and submits their findings in a creative way of their choosing.
Submissions are judged using the following criteria: Correct identification of suspect, Supporting evidence and Creativity.
This year, 588 Year 5 and Year 6 students in 84 teams from schools across the State were originally taking part in Cluedunnit Kids. The number of student participants decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic with 314 students in 55 teams from 19 metro and regional schools taking part.
This year’s scenario focused on three female suspects, a stolen vehicle in Rally Springs, a short police pursuit and the three occupants abandoning and fleeing the vehicle.
The three main suspects were Kia Sportege, Mercedes Frenz and Porsche Soxster. The brief of evidence included statements from Constable Harley Davison, Sue Zooki, Sergeant Elf A’Romeo, Constable Henrietta Ford and Constable Ashton Martin PhD. Feedback from the coordinating teachers confirmed that the students had a lot of fun working out who was the most likely culprit.
The judging panel was really impressed by the creative submissions and the diversity of tools used by teams to identify the prime suspect. This year’s submissions included songs, raps, songs with dance moves, PowerPoint presentations, poems, news reports, recreations of the crime, a game show (runner-up) and a pop-up book (the winning submission).
Having had the opportunity to hone their legal and detective brains, perhaps some of the students might now be thinking about future careers as police officers, lawyers or even judges and magistrates.
Cluedunnit Kids: Have fun, ask questions, and get creative.
